Balance discs, balance cushions and balance pads are ideal tools for improving functional fitness because they help develop core strength and proprioception (the body's ability to sense where it is in space.) Balance discs and balance cushions can be made from PVC material and are usually adjustable by adding or releasing more air.

Besides being used for balance training exercises, some balance discs provide another option for active sitting. If you intend to use a balance disc for an active sitting cushion, look for a balance disc that features at least one curved side (that mimics the top surface of a stability ball) and a low or thin side profile.

Balance pads may be made from closed-cell foam and are a great beginner's balance tool for introducing balance training.
